Modelpalooza Orlando 2013
Jim James sent along this little report from Modelpalooza this past weekend
IPMS Orlando presented their annual Modelpalooza show this weekend (September 28 and 29) and it wasn’t bad. A fair number of vendors with some nice bargains to be found. Federation Models and Frank from Moebius were there on Saturday. Entries in the aircraft and car categories were strong, military hardware was surprisingly thin and there was a nice but small showing in ships (lots of submarines). Dioramas, figures and spacecraft were well represented.
As always, the aircraft were the stars and there was some spectacular work on show. I entered in the diorama, figure and spacecraft categories and came away with a silver for my Viper Mk II and my Skyfall diorama. My black and white Bride of Frankenstein got a merit. IPMS Orlando uses the gold/silver/bronze/merit award system like Wonderfest.
My favorite entry was a Polar Lights Cadet Series Enterprise D labeled “They practically build themselves.” The modeler had combined the box, parts of the decal sheet, the instructions and a partially built kit into a clever display.
All in all, worth the visit.

What! No pictures of mine! I won a merit for my Rommel’s Rod, a 3rd for MIM Aurora box art Frankenstein and Mother’s Worry, and a 2nd for my Moebius BSG Galactica with the 800+ decals on it. It was a pretty good contest but I didn’t buy a single thing, I have a room full and only need building supplies which there weren’t too many of.
Oh, while the open judging format allows for a large number of awards so all good modelers get one if they build a nice model. However, there were only six categories overall and I always dislike it when monsters are grouped with military figures, scifi models with real space, etc.
